STUCK - A Winters Tale - February '25
Friday 21st February
Day 1
January has been a cold month, a very cold month with easterly winds blowing and temperatures dropping to -18c in some parts so not surprising that we have not been away. February was the campervans annual MOT test which she passed with only an advisory about the front tyres are starting to wear which we already knew about, so after that we decided to go away, the weather was set to get warmer but with that came rain and lots of it together with strong winds, we thought that had put pay to our first trip away of the year but at the last minute the rain was more showery so we decided to take the short trip out to Ross-on-Wye but would stay at Marthas Meadow camp site in the hamlet of Foy.
The trip down the motorway was wet with lots of spray from lorries but we soon arrived in Ross and took the riverside road to Foy.
On site we had the choice of any the pitches as we were the only ones here, first though we needed water, we fill the tank and made our way to our chosen pitch only for me to miss align the van and get stuck on the soft verge and get bogged down in the mud.
A quick call to Martha and her Dad came to the rescue and towed us out of the mud, we gave up on the pitches at the bottom and pulled up on pitch two, plugged into the EHU and put the kettle on for a cuppa and lunch.
The afternoon soon passed we read and caught up on some little jobs and if honest a little snooze, the skies had cleared a little but still blowing a gale, Archie needed a walk so I donned coat and boots, wrapped up but in fairness it wasn't that cold, we took a walk into Foy past the church with lovely views down to the river Wye.
It was now starting to get dark so returned to the van, we had a cheeky G&T with some nibbles before tea, Chicken Kiev with mange-tout and parmentier potatoes and a glass or two of rose wine.
After clearing away we sat and watched some telly before bed, it had started raining again, hopefully it will not be a lot.
Saturday 22nd February
Day 2
Woke 7.30, it had rained a lot during the night but this morning it was bright blue skies, there was lots of mist hanging over the river, really quite atmospheric, I took Archie for his morning walk, down the lane past Foys Church to the site of the summer THS site, the river is very high and must still be rising after all the rain last night.
We returned to the van for our breakfasts, Archie soon devoured his, mine was eaten more sedately, bacon, sausage, egg, tomatoes and a couple of hash browns.
We were both in no rush to get off we sat with the sunshine streaming through the windows reading.
By 11.30 we were cleared away and making our way down the lane towards Ross-on-Wye, we have been here may times but today we had a plan to do something different, Adele had found an App the Ross Trail giving us a walking route around the town in search of things we have not seen before. The route started in town at the well visited Market House then to The Old Jail, Ross Free Library, The railway Gardens, Rope Walk, Memorial Gardens, The Gazebo Tower and finally The Prospect.
The tour was about four miles long and was very interesting especially the places we did not know about.
We returned to the van for a well deserved cup of tea and a hot cross bun, the sun was streaming in, it was lovely, both of us had a snooze and only woke as the sun went down and the van got a little cool.
We returned to Marthas Meadow, a couple of jobs to do, CDP and water top up then we sat over looking the river Wye as the sun sank, its going a little cool now, heating on, Adele did a little research for our French Trip at Easter and I wrote this diary.
Supper tonight is lamb meat balls with a morrocan sauce with couscous and a nice bottle of Loire red.
A little telly before a came of Othello,
