You Don't Need To Travel Far.
Friday 30th September
Day 1
Pitched up at Riverside Caravan Park - W & H DA Meet |
Now that I have finally got my schedule sorted at work we have the opportunity to get away weekends, Adele finished her PA work and we made the short drive Down the A449 Shatterford Road to Bridgnorth in Shropshire.
The Worcestershire & Herefordshire DA had a meet planned at the Riverside Caravan Park however, it had been raining heavierly all last night so may have been cancelled due to water logged field, we need not have worried.
We arrived around 5.30pm and booked in with the stewards, paid our £10 PN and drove down to the bottom off the field besides the river, it was still raining.
Having set up I took Izzy for a short walk to check the state of the river Severn, it was well down so no need to panic, when we got back to the van Adèle had started tea, a beef stir-fry tonight followed by some profiteroles. After clearing up it was backgammon time, a good game, down to the last stone, I picked up the first game of the weekend.
Another quick walk for Izzy then bed.
Saturday 1st October
Day 2
What a difference a day makes, we woke up to beautiful blue skies and sunshine, we had a flock of geese around the van, a really lovely morning. I took Izzy out for her morning walk, we both returned to breakfast although mine looked a lot more appetising than Izzys, we had our camping breakfast, a full English with a couple of mugs of coffee.
After breakfast we put on our walking boots to take the riverside walk into Bridgnorth, our stroll along the river bank took about 10 minutes we are much closer than we thought. We reached the bridge over the Severn in lower town.
We planned to walk up the Cartway to upper town, around the town and take the cliff railway back down, we hadn't got far before we stopped to give Izzy a rest at a local alehouse, not that she needed a rest but we fancied a drink,
The Cartway |
after a couple of pints of 'town crier' we continued uo the cartway, originally the only route from the river to high town, there were once 18 alehouses in this short street and numerous houses of disrepute, now only the the Black Boy remains, pub that is, not house of disrepute.
We walked through the high street past the black and white houses, shops and the old town hall and court house that stands in the middle of the road.
We returned by the castle walk to catch the cliff railway but found it closed for maintenance, we continued around the walk into the castle gardens where we found a caravan selling coffee & local ice creams, we sat on a bench in the October sunshine enjoying a well deserved ice cream, it was just like a summers day, we were enjoying the rest but had to, reluctantly, make our way back to the van, it was so pleasant in the gardens we could have stopped there all day.
Bridgnorth Castle |
Back in the van we opened the rear doors and sat with a cup of tea reading, it was time for supper before we knew it, lamb kofftas with Middle Eastern grains and a glass or two of wine.
After clearing away it was time for backgammon, could I make a clean sweep and take the weekend back gammon crown? No, Adèle took the first game so it was game on for the crown.
We had a really good deciding match, I was in a really good position and thought I had won, it was all going down to the last roll of the dice. Adèle was victorious, winning the series 2-1.
The rain has started again, tomorrows forecast is not good.
Sunday 2nd October
Day 3
A Beautiful Start |
We woke late this morning, we must have needed the rest after all the concentration, pressure and stress from our backgammon tournament, the weather is not what was forecast, we have blue skies and sunshine again this morning,
I took Izzy for her morning walk, just a short walk along the river bank as we are going to walk upper town later.
River Severn |
We had breakfast and chatted over coffee, as we have to be off the site by 2.00pm we decided to drive to High town and park up there as to not run late leaving. We took a walk around some of the back streets of Bridgnorth, places we have not seen before.
It was 2.30pm by the time we returned to the van, we had a quick change as we were booked into The Punch Bowl at 3.00pm for Sunday lunch. The short drive to the restaurant gave us enough time, the car park was rammed and was difficult to park Vera but just as I had managed to get her in a corner a car next to us moved so gave plenty of space.
We were seated on time, only the Cauvery on the menu today but that's what we went for, we were seated in the function room which did not have much atmosphere, it felt like a slightly posh canteen but the food was great.
