A Visit to The Royal Oak

Thursday 17th March 2022
Day 1

Our day out to Boscobel House and the Royal Oak had been planned to coincide with a change in the weather, the forecast had been for blue skies and sunshine, however, it had changed over night to grey skies and windy.

We called into town to top up with fuel and to get a few things for lunch, the drive up to Shropshire was fine, travelling via Wolverhampton where the diesel was 5p a litre cheaper!
We arrived at Boscobel House just before lunch so decided to take a tour of the house then have lunch before walking the grounds to The Royal Oak tree and the priory.

Boscobel House is a timber-framed hunting lodge built around 1632 by John Giffard, where King Charles II famously took refuge after fleeing for his life following the civil war battle of Worcester in 1651.

Boscobel House

Entering the house we were greeted by English Heritage volunteer, Tim, who gave us a thorough back ground to the history, he was brilliant, we then wondered through the house, into the saltery, dairy and the forge before returning to 'vera' for lunch.

After lunch we walked into the 17th century gardens and took the short stroll out to The Royal Oak, a descendant of the original, it looked very odd standing all alone in a field but we were told by 'Tim' that at the time when King Charles hid the whole area was covered in dense woodland making it impossible for Cromwell's men to find him.

We then took the mile or so walk down to White Ladies Priory dating from 1186 which also played a part in the escape of King Charles II.

We returned to 'vera' for a cup of tea before heading home.
