We tided up with one eye looking out for the lone gunman.
Friday 18th September
The van was packed and ready to go, I was just waiting for Adele to get back from work and we would be off.
We were on the road before 5.00pm for what should have been just over an hours drive to the camping & caravaning club cs, when we booked we were given a different post code to the one in the book, however, we got lost.
Getting to the village wasn't a problem but finding the site was, we drove up and down the road it was on but couldn't find the site, we eventually pulled on to the village hall car park and checked, we had put the post code in that was in the c&cc book rather than the one the owners had given us. Off we went only two minutes away, wrong, still couldn't see a sign for the site, adele phone the owner who gave us more instructions, we had to go back through the village, over a bridge that is a bridge, over a bridge that doesn't look like a bridge?? then the field is opposite a black and white house, now considering that Eardisland is full of black & white houses this may not help, off we went again but this time we found It!
We drove on to the site which already had three units on, it was flat, with freshly cut grass and huge, we chose a spot at the top of the field next to the hedgerow and fields of what looked like vines, we found out later that they were raspberry canes, it was now 6.30pm. we pitched up, I took Izzy for a short walk around the fields whilst adele got tea ready, it is so peaceful here, back at the van a G&T was waiting as tea was cooking, pork belly with croquet potatoes and suger-snap peas. We sat with the rear doors open as the sun started to set enjoying tea with a bottle of vin de rose. As were finishing off it started to drop colder, we closed the rear doors, tided up and watched TV for an hour or so before retiring early.
Saturday 19th September
We woke after a very peaceful, quiet night to the sound of bird song, after washing I took Izzy for her walk whilst adele got the breakfast ready, bacon, egg, lots of home grown tomatoes and fried bread, we planned to walk into the village to explore then to move on but as it was turning into such a lovely day we thought we stay here another night, we phoned to see if they has space for tonight and there was.
We walked into the village, there are lots of lovely black & white timber framed houses, the river Arrow flows through the village with benches to sit to watch the world go by.
By the main bridge is a community shop, run by volunteers selling local produce, newspapers, there were boxes of apples that were on display to help yourself for a donation to the community to help with flowers, gardens etc. We had a few to make an apple crumble when we get back.
It was gone 12.00pm by now and the two village pubs were open, we popped in to the Swan, sat in the beer garden with a pint of their home-brewed IPA, the sun was shining it was lovely.
After our pint we continued our stroll through the village, next to Ritas', the village tearooms, was the Cross Inn, now not to show favouritism we popped into their beer garden for another this time HPA and very nice it was too, we did think about calling into the tearoom for a bite to eat but we had more waking to do and it would soon be time tea. On the way back to the site we noticed a sign detailing a series of remembrance walks dedicated to fallen soldiers who died in WW1, we would call back tomorrow and walk one.
We sat outside the van in the sunshine reading with a G&T it had been a lovely day, Eardisland was lovely, so picturesque and quite.
Tea tonight was pasta with chicken & chorizo with a glass or two of rose, as we were finishing off tea adele noticed a 4x4 car, headlights on racing over the farmers field next to the van, it stopped suddenly and a man got out armed with a riffle and ran out of sight, she locked the van quickly, don't want any trouble, it disappeared as fast as it arrived, we assumed they were after rabbits.
We tided up with one eye looking out for the lone gunman.
Our scrabble championships resumed and after a good game the points went to me, just!
Sunday 20th September
After another good night, we were woke by the church bells ringing for Sunday service, the skies were grey this morning, our plans today were to take one of the memorial walks and to check out the church, St. Marys The Virgin.
It was now lunchtime so thought we would get a pub lunch, we ordered our pints from the bar then tried to order food, unfortunately, they were fully booked so could only have a drink, we knew that the Cross Inn did not serve food so adele went to Ritas tearoom to see if we needed to book a table, we didn't, so after finishing our drinks we popped up the road to the tearooms, adele had plaice goujons and I had a cheddar ploughmans.
It was almost 3.30pm by the time we left so walked the short distance back to the site, we emptied the tanks and started home, again just over an hours drive, when we got to Leominster they had closed the road, the detour took us an extra half hour and 20 miles, when we got back on the right road we could see the road works, which were only 100 meters from where we started.
The rest of the journey home was uneventful arrived at 4.45pm.
A great weekend in a lovely part of the country.
