We Might Have Gone The Wrong Way

Friday 10th July
We got up  and made a spur of the moment decision, some what out of character for us, to go away this weekend, but where? and would it be safe under these new corvid safe times, Adele found a Camping & Caravaning Club CS site (certified site) at Foy, Herefordshire called Marthas' meadow, after a quick call to make sure they had space we were off, stopped to get fuel and some supplies we made good time down M5 & M50 to Foy at 2.30pm.

Marthas' Meadow is a 'basic' site (no facilities) just water, CDP & EHU, we did need our leveling ramps as the pitches are slightly sloping, the site only takes 5 units so were very well spaced out, there was contact less  payment via a steel security box and plenty of hand sanitizer on site.

The site is surrounded by countryside and looks over the river Wye and the Foy bridge, by 3.00pm we were sitting with a cup of tea enjoying the peace and quiet of the Herefordshire countryside.
The sun has been intermittent today but by 5 o'clock we were enjoying the last of its warmth with a gin & tonic and a bowl of tortilla chips with some dips as an appetizer. Tea tonight was to be a paella cooked on the BBQ all washed down with a glass or two of Chardonnay.
By the time we had finished the sun was starting to set so we took Izzy for her evening walk the short distance to St Marys' Church, something to explore tomorrow.

Saturday 11th July
We woke at 7.30 to blue skies and sunshine after a very peaceful night, lying in bed all we can hear is bird song and the distant bleating of sheep, we had a lovely start to the day with a cup of coffee enjoying the warmth of the sun, then over breakfast, full english of course, we decided we would take one of the suggested walks shown in the old stable block, a relatively short 1.5 miles along the Wye over the bridge and after a short loop return, a light hour or so stroll.

It was almost mid day by the time we set off, a lovely walk through fields of peas and wheat, over the Foy footbridge originally built in the 17th century and rebuilt in 1919 towards Hole In The Wall and past what used to be a PGL holiday centre somewhere I went to with school, canoeing, rock climbing and pony trekking some 45 plus years ago, its now been turned into luxury barn conversions but bought back some happy distant memories.
Now, I don't know whether it was all the chatting about activity holidays from years past but we must have taken the wrong path as we were going in the wrong direction, so our sedate stroll turned into a mammoth (for us) 6 mile, 3 1/2  hour hike and a stand off with locals  who blocked our way on a public footpath, an angry bunch they were too, when I say bunch I actually mean herd, about 30 friesian cows who didn't want us walking through their patch, after a stand off of about 15 minutes they lost interest and went back to their grass, when we eventually arrived back at the van poor old Izzy collapsed, couldn't even stand for a drink of water, we then sat in the sunshine with an ice cream and read until time for tea.

On the menu tonight, pan fried salmon with sugar-snap peas and new potatoes, followed by a naughty slice of cheesecake with strawberry coulis. It was now about 9.30pm and we were both wreaked so we had an early night.

The site doesn't have any night lights so when looking out of the heki sunroof at the stars, as townies, we both were amazed by the amount we could see, a wonderful way to doze off to sleep.

Sunday 12th July
We woke at 8.00am after another quiet night, I took Izzy for her morning walk back down towards St. Marys' church, half way there she didn't want to go any further, she must have still been aching from yesterdays trek so returned to the van. I had coffee whilst Adele prepared breakfast, it was going to be another fine day, the sun was burning so we wound out the awning, sitting in the shade as we ate our full english, we tidied up and read but as we now approaching mid day were needed to pack up and make our way home.

We emptied the grey and black waste, topped up with a spot of water and left Marthas' Meadow, we had planned to call into Ross On Wye, but when we got there, there were an awful lot of people about, we are not ready to mix under these current post lock-down covid-19 restrictions, so, made our way home, a lovely drive, via Ledbury, Malvern and Worcester.
We arrived home about 3.30pm after a lovely, unplanned weekend, we walked a lot, got lost and had some really nice food, here's to our next break.
