Isle Of Anglesey - April 2019

Isle Of Anglesey
April 2019

We started to plan our next mini touring holiday the day we got back from the last.
The good lady wanted to go to Anglesey, North Wales, our plan, if you can call it a plan was to cross the bridge over the menhir straights and travel around the island anti-clockwise and, well that was as far as the plan got.
We left home on the Thusday before Easter, had a lovely trip up through Snowdonia National park and crossed onto the Isle of Anglesey for lunch, found a smashing pull in over looking the straits towards the old menhir bridge.

Having had lunch, we went for a short walk then snoozed, perhaps for a little longer than we should have because when we awoke it was getting later in the afternoon and had not found anywhere to camp, checking on the camping and caravaning club app we found a small site not to far away and they had got space for tonight but were fully booked for the Easter weekend, we put the postcode into the now frustrating sat-nav, we should have really followed the instructions on the web site as the sat-nav, bless her, took us down the narrowest lanes imaginable.
We finally found the site after about 45 minutes, driving less than 10 miles to a warm and friendly welcome, pitched the van and settled down to a gin and tonic.
Having had tea of stuffed tomatoes, followed by blue cheese and bread we took Izzy for a walk though a wooded area at the back of the site before retiring for the night.

After a great nights sleep, I must say how comfortable the bed is in the 120, we awoke to sunshine and blue skies. Following a full english breakfast we made the short trip to Beaumaris, a lovely town on the eastern side of the island, we walked along the sea front looking across the straits towards the mainland and on to Beaumaris castle built by Edward 1 in about 1295 after walking through the town we returned to the van for lunch, we watched the afternoon pass and decided to travel towards Moelfre checking out all the coastal bays along the way, we found an exceptional CCC cl site, again with only one pitch available but what a pitch, within feet of the sea.
Being Good Friday we treated ourselves to pan fried salmon with broad beans and new potatoes after tea we explored the coastal path and watched the sun go down.

The following morning showed the site at its best with blue skies and sunshine having breakfast over looking the sea was a dream, we didn't really want to leave but there was plenty to do explore, we travel just a couple of miles and parked up in Moelfre village, walked the coastal path out to the lifeboat station and beyond sound rocky coves and inlets, a stunning area of coastline.
We returned to Moelfre to enjoy local ice cream overlooking the sea before moving on to Amlwch for lunch then out to South Stacks lighthouse, a wonderful walk in stunning scenery with masses of wild birds. Time was again pressing so we started looking for our camp for the night, being in the middle of the Easter weekend we decided to look inland and found an absolute dream at Llanfairyneubwll, another CCC cl a field in the middle of nowhere overlooking a tidal estuary, the facilities were, how can I put it, different, an old static caravan, the owner did make the effort to sweep out all the old straw left from last year, the views and solitude more than made up for the lack of facilities.

Easter Sunday morning was again a lovely day, more sunshine, more blue skies we had breakfast overlooking the tidal flats with sea birds feeding in the shallows, today we would continue exploring the coastal road around to Rhosneigr, this part of the coast was wonderful sand dunes brushed between the road and the sea, a popular area with wind surfers, canoeists and small sail boats, again ice creams were the order of the day followed by fish & chips for lunch, we walked the beaches for miles, poor Izzy, we walked her legs off.
We found another CCC cl campsite for our final night, this one at Cy Crows, Newborough in the middle of a working vineyard, the vines had been left for a few years but the new owners had started up again, lovely to open up the rear doors overlooking the vines with G&T in hand as the sun goes down.

Our last day on Anglesey started like all on this trip; sunny blue skies, we were late rising and wanted a substantial breakfast, asking if we were okay to leave later, the owners were fine with this, so we enjoyed a hearty breakfast to set us up for the days travel. We went out to Rhosneigr to continue our coastal route around the last part of the island past the National Trusts Plas Newydd house, we had planned to visit, however, the car park was heaving so decided to give it a miss this time, we carried on back to the Menai Bridge crossing the straits for the drive back home.

A wonderful Easter break to Anglesey, a stunning area, with great scenery and wild life, well worth the drive.
